Dale Dougherty, and Maker Faires

Dale Daugherty is a technology and publishing enthusiast. He co-founded O’Reilly Media, founded MAKE magazine, and created the world’s largest DIY festival, Maker Faire. I know Mr. Daugherty (he doesn’t know me, I’m sure) from his pioneering creation of Global Network Navigator, the first commercial website on the Internet. At the time, I was the owner of a small consulting company in upstate New York and GNN inspired us to launch Global Electronic Marketing Service, a venture to market real estate online. It was a very educational experience, but in 1993 we were on a shoestring budget and slightly ahead of our time. A couple years later I was managing Internet Operations at AOL when we acquired GNN from O’Reilly to expand our Internet footprint. In was still a small Internet world back then. I’ve always been a big fan of everything they do at O’Reilly, and I am once again inspired by their support of “make” activities…
